This course provides a solid grounding in the concepts behind metadata and emphasises the main skills needed for effective metadata work.  This course is aimed at professional library and information workers who are taking on responsibility for metadata in their work.

During the course participants will:

• Gain an understanding of the concepts underpinning metadata
• Learn how to deploy LIS skills in a metadata management environment
• Explore ways in which metadata can improve retrieval
• Discover the main metadata standards that are available

Course tutor:

David Haynes is an experienced Library and Information Professional, a chartered member of CILIP and a member of the British Computer Society.  He has worked across all parts of the LIS sector including: special libraries, public library services, government and health libraries, academic libraries and commercial information units as well as on information management and records management assignments.  He is author of “Metadata for Information Management and Retrieval” published by Facet and teaches metadata and taxonomy to post-graduate students at City University London and at the University of Dundee’s Centre for Archives and Information Studies (CAIS).
